  • What do you do?

    North Ayrshire Women's Aid offer a confidential and non-judgemental service to women, children and young people. We provide information, support and counselling.

  • What are your opening hours?

    Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 6.00

  • Do I need to make an appointment?

    Usually we prefer clients to call and make an appointment as there may not be support worker free to help you straight away. But if you come to the office without an appointment we will try our best to assist you. Please be also aware that if it is not possible for you to come to the office our workers can meet you in another safe location such as a health centre.

  • Is the service you provide confidential?

  • Is the service you provide confidential?

    Anything you say to any member of the staff will kept confidential and we won’t disclose any information regarding your situation to any other agency (social work department, etc..) without gaining your consent first, unless we have concerns about your, or someone else's safety.

  • How much does your service cost?

    The service we provide is completely free for women and children, although if you are working and staying in one of our refuges, you may have to make a contribution to your accommodations costs.

  • Can you give financial help?

    No. However, we are able to advise on sources of financial assistance and help you with your applications to the relative agencies (social work department, Inland Revenue, Housing Department etc..)

  • What are my legal rights if I leave my husband/partner?

    Independently from your immigration status you have to right to report any incidents to the police and seek protection from the abuse, you also have the right to seek legal advice about your individual circumstances. See section on legal rights under "Information".

  • I don’t want my husband to have permission to see my children. Is that possible?

    According to the UK law, each parent has the same right to see the children in case of divorce. You can ask the court to deny your husband his right to access and contact in cases where there has been violence and abuse that has a direct impact upon your children and where this can be proven.

  • What is an emergency plan?

    A woman who realises she may have to leave home urgently can be greatly assisted by being prepared. She needs to plan where she and the children would go, how they would get there and what she would take. The following checklist may help:

    Keep and bring with you birth and marriage certificates, passports and any other legal documents that you have access to.
    Have important telephone/typetalk numbers available (refuge, friend, family).
    Hide some money, credit cards, open your own savings account.
    Have necessary medication put aside.
    Have packed bag with change of clothes, toiletries, toys, hidden or at someone else’s house.

  • What is a refuge and where can I find one?

    A refuge is a safe place to stay for women (with or without children) to give you time and space to think about your options. For further information see under "Services for Women"

  • How can I help a friend or colleague?

    If you think a friend or colleague is being abused, try telling her that you're concerned, say why you're worried and ask if she wants to talk to you about it. Let her know you want to help. You don't have to know all the answers. The important thing is to break the isolation. If your friend or colleague is to scared to call us, let her know that you can call us on her behalf and get advice.

  • Do you provide training?

    We run a rolling programme of training from multi-agency service providers.See under "Training" for further details.

  • Are you available to give public talks on your work?

    We give talks and workshops about our work and the issues we deal with to other organisations, conferences, schools, churches etc. Contact us for details if you would like us to attend a particular event.
